What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is dedicated to providing anxiety-free dental care. It involves administering medications that take the edge off of dental visits, helping patients feel calm and relaxed. At Prosper Periodontics & Dental Implants, we offer a range of sedation dentistry options to address different levels of anxiety and patient needs.

The following are some of the sedation dentistry options we offer right here at our Prosper practice:

Nitrous Oxide: Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is a mild form of inhaled sedation that we administer through a mask placed on your nose. You'll feel calm and relaxed soon after you start breathing in the gas mixed with oxygen. However, you'll remain awake and responsive to directions. The effects of nitrous oxide wear off almost immediately after removing your mask, allowing you to resume your daily activities without interruption.

Oral Sedation: Oral conscious sedation provides a deeper level of relaxation, making it an excellent choice for patients with moderate to severe dental anxiety. It involves taking oral medication before your dental work. You will feel drowsy and incredibly calm and relaxed, but you should remain conscious and able to respond to Dr. Parachuru. It may take longer for this form of sedation to wear off after treatment, so we request you have a trusted friend or family member accompany you and drive you home.

IV Sedation: IV sedation involves administering medication directly into your bloodstream, which produces immediate calming effects and a deep level of sedation. This form of sedation is ideal for patients with severe dental anxiety or phobia or those in need of lengthy or complex treatments. As with oral sedation, the effects of IV sedation may linger for some time, so we request that you have a trusted adult drive you home and stay with you as you recover.
